Earth Day is a globally recognized day to raise awareness about environmental issues like climate change, pollution, deforestation, and conservation of natural resources, celebrates on April 22.
It serves as a global reminder to the importance of Environmental Accountability and sustainability in other to create a healthier and conducive environment.
The Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement, which was instituted in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a US senator and environmentalist
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009.
The Day recognizes the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity’s common home and the need to protect her to enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
This year, with the theme “Planet vs Plastics” aims to raise awareness on the danger of plastic pollution for human and planetary health.
According to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in its event today, encourages all to commit to the protection of the planet and works together to restore the planet, not just for ourselves, but for the future generations.
Also the President of EarthDay.Org, Kathleen Rogers, who at another event said, “The Planet vs. Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet.”
