THE Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission has approved a two-day weekly farming period for its workers, reducing the number of work days in the predominantly riverine state to three.
This followed the directive of Governor Douye Diri as part of measures to encourage civil servants to embrace farming in the wake of the rising cost of living.
A circular by the state Head of Service, Mrs Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, directed that the two days break should be used for farming to promote food security in the state.
The circular, read: “I am directed to inform you that the governor has approved three days within the week as work days for all staff on salary Grade level 14 and below other than teachers, medical personnel and those performing essential duties for the next six months.
“The remaining two days in the working week are granted to civil servants as farming days to promote food security.
“All accounting officers should ensure that every staff report to work three times in the week, so that no office, department or unit is completely closed at any time.
“The circular comes into effect from April 29, 2024.”
