In an effort to enhance environmental sustainability, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in continued demonstration of its commitment to public health safety, and credible and sustainable wastewater management in the State, has sealed a residential property on Adedosu Street, Otubu, Agege.
The bungalow, which houses over 10 rooms, was sealed off for having an overfilled pit latrine which has led to the discharge of faecal matter into the adjourning public drains, emitting obnoxious odours, polluting the environment, which is liable to cause an outbreak of diseases.
The General Manager of the Agency, Engr Adefemi Afolabi, who led the compliance team to the property, said such a situation will not be allowed in the State as the health and well-being of the citizens of the State is paramount to the administration of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
Afolabi emphasised that the State had just come out of the cholera outbreak some months back, and as such, all efforts are being put in place to ensure that such outbreaks do not re-occur in the State.
In line with this, the General Manager directed the compliance team to issue a seven-day ultimatum to the property owners and tenants of the house to properly evacuate the pit latrine and construct a standard sewage system which non-compliance will lead to sanctions.
He advised residents of the State to properly manage sewage systems as this is a direct nexus to public health and the prevention of outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
